Nike's Beaverton,
Ore., corporate campus has earned certification from Portland-based
Salmon Safe for its adoption of programs to maintain watershed health and environmental quality.
The company participated in a
trial Salmon Safe program in spring 2005, as the certification
standards were developed for corporate and university campuses. Nike's
175-acre corporate campus is the
first to receive recognition by the Salmon Safe label.
Designed to promote fish-friendly land management
practices,
Salmon Safe is a third-party certification available to both farms and
urban landowners. Standards for corporate campus certification, released
in July 2005, include stormwater management to
minimize parking surface run-off; habitat restoration and protection
for waterways and wetlands on or adjacent to the campus; reduced
pesticide use for treatment of weeds and
pests as part of a detailed pest management plan; reduced irrigation in
case of drought and other impacts on salmon; and adoption of low-impact
development designs for future construction and expansion.
According to the Nike Web site, the company has incorporated native
plants and bioswales to its landscaping, reduced water usage by over 60
percent, and switched to organic fertilizers on all but one field
on its Beaverton campus.
